I am so excited with our news!
Two years ago just after we got engaged, we decided we wanted to buy a house. Before I met my husband, my initial idea on moving to Brussels in 2012 was to set up a British Style Cafe. When we were looking to buy a house we first looked at town houses with a commerce on the Ground Floor so that I could still fulfill my idea of a British Style Cafe in Brussels.
We looked, and looked, but ultimate we were shocked by the conditions of the living quarters in a house with a commerce. It turns out that most people just use the upstairs section for storage, and do not use it for living, as a result they really are in poor condition. Yet, the amount of money we would require to buy the house was astronomical and that was without the hidden costs of renovating it. My dream had to change slightly.
We decided we could afford somewhere in the countryside, with a large barn, that we could convert. Instead of doing a British Style Cafe I could do a cooking school, specialize in cakes, and do some catering. Our house search expanded.
Then we found the house. Pride of place in the small village of Bossut, Grez-Doiceau in Belgium. It met my conditions of being within 30 minutes of Brussels, yet it was in the countryside and had an old barn. It was reasonably priced, and even though it would require a lot of renovation work, it would allow us to bring life into an old house, and really make it our own. You can see the photos of its current state in The House of Horror post. Our new project was born.
We went to the architect, drew up the plans, changed a few things, shared them with lots of important people, changed them again, and submitted them to the local council. Six months later our plans were refused. We were gutted!
We re-designed them, we re-shared them, we re-designed them some more, we re-submitted them.. and patiently waited, and waited, and waited, and got a bit frustrated so we were no longer waiting patiently…. and this week we received the letter. Our plans just got accepted! Woohoo! I actually did an unconscious air punch with joy! It has been two years since we found the house, and finally we can move forward.
A huge thanks has to go out to our Architect, Edwin from Loft & Partners, for his creative ideas and patience!
I have added some of Edwin’s sketches to give you an idea of what we are doing – isn’t it fabulous! They give you an idea of the space, although the actual finish of the rooms will look quite different (for example, there is no way we will be having those ridiculous red light shades!!!).
We still have some work to do before the renovation work will start. You will, of course, be able to follow its progress here!
